    As a chaplain and minister, much of how I see and understand the world relates to Divine Providence, sometimes known in theological circles as the sovereignty of God. It happens when someone loses their job, only to find a better one some time later. It happens when a player is out of contract, but ends up discovering an opportunity that otherwise would not have been open to them. It can occur when one substitution on the pitch provides the game-winning goal or assist. The sovereignty of God has long been the subject of debate (amongst Christians) - not so much whether God is sovereign, but to what extent does His sovereignty extend into the affairs of humankind?      “I will heal their waywardness    and love them freely,    for my anger has turned away from them." - The Lord speaking through Hosea to Israel, Hosea 14:4 The words of the prophet Hosea were poignantly delivered to me in the form of a ministry charge during my ordination service. It is a powerful charge - heal their waywardness and love them freely. The two-pronged charge has become a guardrail in terms of my ministry as pastor and as chaplain.     While the offseason can mean many things for professional athletes the most integral part of this time is to capitalize on the opportunity to find rest. With the Major League Soccer season beginning preseason preparations in February and the championship game being held in mid-December, there is little true rest to be had for the players and their families who endure such a lengthy season. Even the offseason, with its time away from the game presents many different opportunities that get in the way of taking that rest. For some players, they can spend several weeks overseas training with other clubs. Others will be invited into camp for their respective national teams to play in friendly matches. Still others have

  • From the Rev: Character in the Dark

    The evangelist, D.L. Moody once said, "Character is what you are in the dark." Who are we when no one is looking? Who are we when no one is around? Perhaps, for the professional athlete, this question seems irrelevant - much of the professional life is spent in front of cameras, events and comments are captured by smartphones, minutia is tweeted, facebooked, instagrammed and more.  Is there any dark in an athletes' life? Is there any moment when the crowds or coaches, family or friends aren't watching? Well, regardless if we are professional athletes or have another vocational capacity there are no moments when we are ever truly alone or unseen.   • From the Rev: Glory, Glory Man United

    I recently had the privilege to take in the Manchester United vs. AS Roma match that was held in Denver, CO as part of the Guinness International Champions Cup held in the summer of 2014 through the United States. It was a chance to see, up close, some of the world's best teams and best players. As an addition to this past summer's World Cup, it made for a wonderful summer-filled with soccer. For me, part of the joy was to be able to share the game with my oldest daughter, Brianna (pictured below). Now, to be honest, my daughter is still probably more excited about getting Dippin' Dots at the game than seeing the likes of Wayne Rooney score
