• February was a heavy travel month — as there is a preseason in sports, there is a preseason in sports chaplaincy as well. Feb 7-8: Leoti, KS To begin, a 400-mile road trip out to Leoti, KS for presbytery meetings. As an ordained minister in the EPC (Evangelical Presbyterian Church), it is important to work to attend a number of our quarterly meetings if at all possible. The added benefit for this trip was two fold: a) I got to spend an unexpected amount of time with our new chaplain in Memphis, Greg Aydt. His re-routed and re-directed flight put him into Denver and I had an extra seat. It was a God-thing to get the additional 4 hours on the

  • The United Soccer League (USL) this past week announced a rebranding and restructuring of its leagues. The USL will remain as a corporate identity with a re-envisioned logo (above). Meanwhile, the three tier will be Championship, League One, and League Two respectively.       While League Two has some clarity around this being the new version of the PDL (Player Development League) and a pre-professional league, it is not clear at this moment what teams will make up League One and Championship. Currently, Soccer Chaplains United has chaplains at four USL teams — Charlotte Independence, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, Nashville SC, and Rio Grande Valley Toros FC. It is possible that one or more of those teams could have

  • Soccer Chaplains United is pleased to announce the approval and placement of Billy Cerveny to serve as chaplain for Nashville SC. Billy is a long-time Nashville resident and a pastor at Midtown Fellowship Church. Before becoming a pastor, Billy was a Nashville singer and songwriter as well as a writer and television producer. He co-wrote the book “Take The Walk” with the band Hanson.   He comes to Soccer Chaplains United after our 6-month search stretching back to August of 2017. The placement has taken an extra amount of time as Nashville SC was recently awarded an expansion placement with Major League Soccer (MLS).  The team will begin play in the United Soccer League (USL) until the team makes the transition

  • I had the privilege of spending part of last week in Nashville. The primary purpose of the trip was to do some training and coaching with our chaplain candidate who will serve Nashville SC this upcoming year. We're not quite ready to announce who the chaplain is, but we will within the next few weeks as we complete the process. With Nashville SC Head Coach, Gary Smith, being someone that I have worked with in the past (Colorado Rapids 2009-2011), there has been tremendous opportunity to assist in finding and developing the chaplaincy role for this new, exciting addition to U.S. Soccer. Nashville was recently awarded a Major League Soccer expansion franchise. As the team competes in the United Soccer

  • A quick update as today, we were able to put forward our top chaplain candidate to Nashville SC. The search for a chaplain which began back in August, culminated in developing a candidate pool. We had those candidates meet with Tennessee Titans (American Football) Chaplain, Casey Cramer for an additional layer of vetting. Casey was helpful in sharing his own personal experience of working in a church setting and offering a chaplain presence to a pro sport team in the Nashville culture. Next steps will include the chaplain candidate meeting with team ownership to get a feel for cultural fit. Once the candidate has been accepted, Soccer Chaplains United will begin doing more coaching and development support as the chaplain
