Counseling Development

Counseling comes as an outworking of our chaplaincy model. Soccer Chaplains United offers an integrated, team-approach to care and while not everyone will receive from a chaplain — that doesn’t change the care needs. As chaplains seek to offer holistic care for those they serve, there are some areas in terms of mental and emotional health that go beyond the particular skill set or training of a chaplain. Our counselors work with our chaplains to complement and offer an additional resource — to the athletes, coaches, staff, alumni, and families of those we serve.

Development Phase

  • Soccer Chaplains United counseling develops out of a chaplain currently serving a club or organization.
  • Soccer Chaplains United counselors meet certain criteria:
    • Master’s level training
    • Licensed, professional counselors
    • Sport-sensitive
    • Available to serve athletes, coaches, staff, alumni, and family
    • Agree to offer a number of free sessions annually
    • Agree to work on a sliding scale for additional sessions
    • Utilize a subsidy for the neediest that we serve

Frequently Asked

  • Why a counselor?  Religion is a barrier. Not everyone will be open or receptive to a chaplain’s offer of care. Additionally, counselors receive training with certain clinical techniques and methods differing from pastoral counseling.
  • Are your counselors religious? – Soccer Chaplains United counselors are Christian, however, they adhere to strict ethical rules and conduct that govern the discussion of religion or faith in a counseling session.
  • Do counselors and chaplains talk to each other about an individual? – No, chaplains make referrals. Counselor-client privilege and privacy is strictly guarded. A counselor does not reveal that a person has even contacted them.
