• Today, the summer transfer window for Major League Soccer opens. From July 10 - August 9, MLS teams can make trades and bring in foreign talent. For many teams, this window represents an opportunity to make improvements to a team — some teams bring in a player from another country or from a team within the league in an effort to try bolster team needs and win a coveted playoff position. For fans, many are hopeful that a playmaker or difference-maker brought in can propel their team to victory or help continue to sustain early-season efforts. But on the other side, the summer transfer window also represents a time of need for MLS teams and their respective chaplains or ministry

  • We are pleased to announce the addition of a chaplain to serve the Rio Grande Valley Toros FC of McAllen, Texas. Isidro Piña, a local minister in the Edinburg/McAllen, Texas area, has been patiently waiting for the chaplaincy opportunity to develop. We met Isidro, last August, and began a conversation about possibly serving the club. Isidro becomes the 11th chaplain to serve with Soccer Chaplains United and came via a recommendation from Chaplain Cesar Duran. You can read more about Isidro on his bio page here. • Today, Roger Lipe of FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) hosted myself and Jorge Vallejo, also of FCA, on a phone interview to discuss chaplaincy for soccer. I have known Jorge for a number of years and we have had the privilege of serving a number of the same people — players, coaches, and staff. Jorge serves as chaplain for Atlanta United FC (Major League Soccer). Jorge and I offer some perspectives and share our thoughts and experience with chaplaincy in soccer/football during the call. You can listen to the recorded call (approx. 45 min), here at this link: https://fccdl.in/gmWPwtPfWX If you are interested in learning more about becoming involved in soccer chaplaincy, I would encourage you to reach out to us

  • Soccer Chaplains United is pleased to announce the approval and placement of Billy Cerveny to serve as chaplain for Nashville SC. Billy is a long-time Nashville resident and a pastor at Midtown Fellowship Church. Before becoming a pastor, Billy was a Nashville singer and songwriter as well as a writer and television producer. He co-wrote the book “Take The Walk” with the band Hanson.   He comes to Soccer Chaplains United after our 6-month search stretching back to August of 2017. The placement has taken an extra amount of time as Nashville SC was recently awarded an expansion placement with Major League Soccer (MLS).  The team will begin play in the United Soccer League (USL) until the team makes the transition

  • Soccer Chaplains United is pleased to announce the addition of Gerardo Alvarez to the chaplaincy team serving the Colorado Rapids. Gerardo works as a medical interpreter at Denver Health Medical Center and is fluent in Spanish and English. He will assist with chaplaincy coverage and Spanish language needs from the Rapids 1st-Team to the Development Academy and also with Rapids alumni. He fills the vacancy left by Chaplain Cesar Duran last summer. Gerardo, a Colombian by birth, came to the U.S. in 1997 to be closer to family. He has faithfully served as a medical interpreter since 2004 — helping patients, families, and staff with translation and understanding medical procedures and other needs. He enjoys spending time with his family
