Timothy Project: Valor Kenya 2017 is pleased to come alongside a wonderful mission team of Valor students and staff as they spent 12 days working hard to accomplish an impressive number of projects. Near the end of the school year, Timothy Project received a request for Rapids jerseys from a team preparing to go to Kenya. While they were not sure exactly when or how the jerseys were to be used, they were confident that many would be blessed by them.
Toby Coffman, Valor Christian teacher, reached out to Timothy Project with the request. His explanation of the trip’s itinerary was extensive.
We are taking a group of 18 high school students over to Kenya. We will be visiting primarily Nairobi and rural areas in the Eldoret area. Our ministry partners are HEART, an advocacy group for HIV+ women and their children. We will be visiting the families in the slums of Nairobi and taking the kids to a picnic at a park in a wealthier area. For many, this will likely be their first exposure to such a place.
Also, in Nairobi we will be visiting a community center in the slums where one of our staff members and leaders of our trip, Anthony Wanjiru, was a member as a child. He received invaluable assistance that helped him begin his journey from the slums of Nairobi to high school, college, and a Master’s program. We will look to bless this group with both sports equipment as well as helping them to establish a library for students. Each of our students will be bringing books that they have selected to help in this process.
After leaving Nairobi we will drive to Kisii and build houses for women in the HEART program within that more rural village. We will spend two days there and then travel to Kitale, just north of the famous running city of Eldoret to serve at the Children of Hope orphanage. Children of Hope is run by a family active in our school. In Kitale, we will be producing a VBS series for the local children. Last year we had over 800 children attend. We will also do another home build in the area.
We will fly back from Kitale to Nairobi, spend a day debriefing at the HEART facility, visit the new Children of Hope orphanage in Nairobi and then fly home. We are looking forward to reuniting with these ministry partners and trust that God will bless this extended relationship we have with each of them. We also trust that we will bless specifically the children and mothers we interact with. Of course we are praying, too, that the students we take come back with a heart for missions, a compassion for orphans and widows, and a desire to see God’s shalom rule in this earth.
In Part 2 of Valor Kenya 2017 we will post pictures and thoughts from Coffman about the team’s time in Kenya and how the giving of the Timothy Project donations went.
