Community First Soccer Means Soccer For All

In late June, Sebastian Navarro with Community First Soccer reached out to Tacoma Defiance Chaplain, Jubal McDaniel. Is there any soccer gear that we might be able to give away to the children participating in our youth camps this summer? Earlier this year, Jubal had gone through the process of closing down his own non-profit, Northwest Football Ministries. In previous years, Jubal and Sebastian had connected to mutually serve local communities in the state of Washington through soccer.

Community First Soccer is a soccer non profit 501(c)3 whose main goal is to make soccer accessible to all starting with the underserved communities who need it the most. They host free soccer camps and college showcases. Their mission and aim is to never charge for a soccer camp. They make their camps free and accessible to as many people as possible — a difficult task in the pay-to-play soccer culture that permeates the North American landscape, currently.

There were multiple camps held — Yakima, Quincy, and Sunnyside — all cities across southeast Washington over a period of two weeks in late July. The camps were free to all of the families and helped provide soccer gear, lunches, haircuts, and new friends! Local professionals, like former Seattle Sounder Roman Torres, were on site to coach, encourage, and engage with the kids.

This Community Project fulfillment also marked another “first” of sorts — gear from Jubal in Tacoma, and not Denver. As Soccer Chaplains United continues to grow, so do the opportunities for expanding our abilities to get used soccer gear to other communities through our Community Project program. All totaled, Jubal delivered about 20 bags of gear for CFS to use over the course of the two weeks.

Lino Leads Charge to Assist Refugee Resettlement in Spokane

Jubal McDaniel and his non-profit, Northwest Football Ministries, recently returned from Spokane, Washington where he took soccer gear as part of our Community Project program. He shares about the soccer camp went and about meeting and working with Jackson Lino in an update below.

Jackson Lino

Jackson Lino is the Youth Program Director for Thrive International in Spokane, WA. Jackson immigrated to the US as a refugee and later started working for World Relief in Spokane. His heart is to see immigrant and refugee youth and families thrive in the greater Spokane area. I initially connected with Jackson via Twitter in 2018 and we hosted our first camp together in 2019. The camp takes place over the course of a week during the summer. The first few days include basic skills and lots of scrimmage games. On the final day, the kids organize themselves into teams and we run a tournament. There are two brackets – one for each age group. In addition, our camp provides free cleats, socks, shinguards, jerseys, goodies and snacks for the kids. We would not be able to do this without our church and community partners! 

This year was a massive step in the development of our soccer camp program! We served 60 youth that represented 10 different countries. One of the most exciting developments this year was the additional support from the new USL Spokane group! USL Spokane held a cleat drive for the camp and acquired a donation of soccer balls from Park. This year’s tournament included players from the USA National Military Women’s Soccer Team, who just happened to be training in Spokane! To top it off, a local news outlet came out to feature the youth and Thrive International’s youth program. Absolutely amazing! I cannot wait to see what’s in store for next year!

Reaching Out to Refugees – Soccer in Spokane

Jubal McDaniel doubles as a volunteer chaplain by night, an athletic director and soccer coach and non-profit leader by day, and a host of other things in between. Recently, in a phone call with Jubal, he mentioned some work that he is resuming with taking soccer to encourage and love on refugee youth and families in Spokane, WA later this summer.

Jubal and his non-profit, NW Football Ministries will partner with World Relief Spokane. World Relief is a global Christian humanitarian organization that brings sustainable solutions to the world’s greatest problems – disasters, extreme poverty, violence, oppression, and mass displacement. They partner with local churches and community leaders in the U.S. and abroad to bring hope, healing and transformation to the most vulnerable.

I am hopeful that we see a first successful camp for Thrive International. I am excited about the wider community recognition that this camp has received from community churches, non-profits and local soccer clubs.

In 2019, Jubal and his group served over 55 children in the first year of the project. The Ball Project was a sponsor in that initial year — the children in the camp all received a soccer ball, cleats, shin guards and soccer socks. In 2020, COVID has forced closure of the summer soccer camp. 2021 saw a return and this year, Jubal and members of World Relief and Thrive International expect well over 100 children to be part of the camp to be held in late June. There will likely be a majority of refugees from the continent of Africa.

Jubal is requesting any available equipment, warm-ups, jerseys, in various sizes from youth small to large. We are also looking for a donor to offset the costs of shipping gear items to him (approximately $70).

Announcing New Tacoma Defiance Chaplain

I am pleased to announce the newest member of Soccer Chaplains United — Jubal McDaniel. Jubal will serve as volunteer chaplain for the Tacoma Defiance, of the United Soccer League—Championship.

Jubal is the Founder and Executive Director of NW Football Ministries, a non-profit organization created to help poor and immigrant families be able to enjoy the game of soccer and to also receive encouragement and hear about the Good News of the Gospel through the examples and witness of the coaches. Jubal also serves as Elementary Athletic Director for Cascade Christian Schools where he coaches the girls Junior High and High School teams. You can learn more on his bio page here.

Jubal McDaniel will serve as the volunteer chaplain for the Tacoma Defiance

The appointment of McDaniel and placement with Tacoma comes during an interesting time with the effects of COVID-19 and the global pandemic still limiting chaplain interactions with teams, but with doors opening for chaplains to provide care from a distance.

Jubal’s appointment comes at an important time as the USL season is into the playoffs. With Tacoma not advancing out of the group stage, Jubal’s attention will turn toward offseason work including supporting athletes and coaches transitioning for the next couple of months. Jubal will also begin to lay the groundwork for future chaplaincy service in 2021 to his local, hometown team.

Jubal will look to raise expenses through Soccer Chaplains United and donations toward the Tacoma chaplaincy may be made through the Tacoma fund tab through PushPay or by marking “Tacoma” in the memo section of a check and mailed to our Denver PO box address below.

I really have appreciated the depth of this process and the professionalism with the coaches and athletes in working through this with Soccer Chaplains United. I am really looking forward to working with and serving my local club, the Tacoma Defiance, as chaplain.
