Today on the podcast, I take some time to offer up some reflections on the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. 9/11 is one of those days and moments in time when you certainly remember where you were when things transpired. I equate it to the more recent global pandemic. Certainly, there are some heroes around the events of the day — and many of them were the first responders who entered into the fray and chaos of what was going on.
In reflection, God is the first, First Responder — in Genesis 3, when Adam and Eve have sinned and the fall has happened, it is God who walks into the fray and calls out to humanity. He then puts into action the plan to rescue and to save, and this happening in the person of Jesus who (as The Message puts it in John 1:14) moves into the neighborhood. I conclude with an encouragement and prayer for us as we face our own tower-collapsing, world shut-down moments in life.

The introduction to Gerard Deonarine and recent online, training sessions for new, volunteer Trinidad and Tobago soccer chaplains presented an opportunity to send some soccer gear down as part of Soccer Chaplains United’s Community Project program. Amongst the items requested are some really neat uniform packages — a jersey with matching shorts and socks provided by Coerver Coaching soccer, recently.
I enjoy (sometimes grumble when the weather is bad) putting together these projects and imagining the person on the other end unwrapping a brand new kit or even a slightly used jersey. For so many, who have so little, it is a thing of joy when they can receive gifts like these from the hands of our partners.
Some of the biggest challenges in getting the gear out includes borders and customs as well as shipping items or having them delivered. But God usually helps to get through these challenges and obstacles and all of it is for His glory.

In professional soccer, there are all sorts of behind-the-scenes, backstabbing moments that go on. A coach who gets ousted, a technical director who is fired, an athlete who is set aside and more. Just as in Psalm 5, David reflects on the “ambush” moment and how God is on his side; how the Lord is there to support him, even in difficult moments when many might despair.
Are you headed in for that difficult out come meeting? Pray Psalm 5.

All books are available globally on Amazon and contain 31 psalms that have been translated into “soccer psalms” — with words, language, and metaphors that connect soccer to God’s Word. A long community project fulfillment in the making, Francis Chivuta made a request this past May. Dr. Chip Johnston, a friend of Francis’ who makes frequent discipleship and teaching trips to Zambia, offered to carry out soccer gear on his next trip, met with me in early June. And just a week ago, Francis sent the pictures and video (below) of the team receiving the gear and expressing their thanks.
Greetings Rev Brad,
On behalf of Unathi Sports Academy in Lusaka, Zambia and indeed on my behalf, I would like to express my deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to you Rev. Brad and the GSCA for your incredible support and sponsorship of sports gears that came through Dr Chip Johnston from US.
Your generosity is much more than financial support, it is an investment in the dreams, talents, discipline, and future of young people of Zambia. Through your sponsorship, you have given our athletes an opportunity to pursue their passion for sport, develop their God-given abilities, and believe that their dreams are possible. My prayer and desire is to grow and maintain a health relationship with you and the GSCA.
At Unathi Sports Academy, we believe that sport is a powerful tool for transforming lives and a means of sharing the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Your contribution will help us create an environment where young athletes can grow not only as sportsmen and sportswomen, but also as responsible, disciplined, confident, purpose-driven individuals and disciples of Christ.
Thank you for believing in Unathi Sports Academy. Thank you for believing in our young athletes. Thank you for standing with us in this important mission.
Your kindness has touched many lives who have seen your gifts, and we do not take your support for granted. We pray that God continues to bless you and GSCA abundantly, strengthen you, and reward you for the difference you are making in the lives of these young people.
As the Academy Director, I am truly grateful to call you a partner in this journey. Your support today is helping to build the champions of tomorrow. I look forward to a continued partnership with you and GSCA.
With profound appreciation and gratitude,
Francis Chivuta – Academy Director Unathi Sports Academy Lusaka, Zambia

In the modern game of football, the supporter has a particularly strong voice. Often the fan’s voice is represented with their finance, other times by their social media influence, and other times the voice is presented with violence. The relationship between an ardent supporter and the football team can be a tenuous one at times. It mirrors often the human relationship with God — we deny authority, we rise up and rebel, and more.
Soccer Psalm 14 (as a reflection of Psalm 14) considers how the need for a response from the Owner (from God) against the foolish rebellion. God’s presence with the righteous and upright makes all the difference.
