Highline Community Church Likely Moving Out, Moving On

Highline Community Church (HCC) has graciously partnered with Soccer Chaplains United for the past three years. Thanks to Brian Gawf and the church, to allow myself (Brad) to utilize some office space for my work with Soccer Chaplains United, as Executive Director, and the Colorado Rapids, as volunteer chaplain, it’s been nice to have a “home away from home” for the past few years.

The church, though, has recently received an offer for their building and are exploring the possibility to sell and move into a space that is more suitable for them as a church. Unfortunately, that means that myself and several of the other “tenants” in the building will need to move on and find a new space.

I’ve put a message out to several churches in my denomination, but many of them are operating beyond capacity at this point with not enough space for their own staff. While the sale is still in process, a summer move out and move on is looking more and more likely. I’d appreciate prayers for a new opportunity that keeps me somewhat close to I-25. The current space has been ideal for accessing the stadium and meeting people downtown and other parts of town.

I am super grateful to Brian and the church for allowing me the use of the space and opportunity to continue the work of Soccer Chaplains United. Highline Renews Partnership with Soccer Chaplains United

Highline Community Church (HCC) is partnering with Soccer Chaplains United again!

HCC, originally partnered with us from 2017 – 2020. At the time, HCC was the third church partner in our history. HCC provided monthly financial support during those years to help advance the work and mission of the ministry. Additionally, the church would feature the work and ministry of Soccer Chaplains United in its local missions moments — including a few Sunday morning introductions.

A few months ago, as I was anticipating some life changes for me and my family (namely high school graduation and needing an extra living space in our home), I spoke with Brian Gawf (Pastor of HCC) about whether the church might have an extra office that I might be able to use. We discussed some different ways that myself and the ministry could partner with the church in exchange for utilizing the space, and in the end, HCC was gracious and generous in offering a new space.

Located near I-25 and Orchard Road, the church is a little bit closer to the stadium for the work that I do with the Colorado Rapids. But more than that, the new space allows my family a little bit of breathing room as I have been had a home office for the last 7 years.

I am grateful for the space and opportunity to continue the work of Soccer Chaplains United in this new space. I pray that God blesses Highline ten times over for the ways that it is blessing and supporting Soccer Chaplains United and me.

Highline Community Church Moves on as Partner

For the past few years, Highline Community Church has been a faithful, supporting church partner for Soccer Chaplains United. I still remember the August brunch with the mission committee that I had been invited to come and share our story. It was our Timothy Project program (now called out Community Program) that really grabbed the attention of several members of the committee. I shared a story of some soccer gear and how it had changed a church’s out-of-country ministry and local people’s lives. A few weeks later, the pastor called me, “Brad, we’d like to help support some Timothy Projects for this next year.”

That conversation and initial support led to myself and Soccer Chaplains United developing a partnership with Highline Community Church and they have been a great part of our support team the past couple years.

Unfortunately, a reduced missions and church budget and a shift of church emphasis has led Highline to re-prioritize mission initiatives and partnerships. Thankfully, though, the church decided to see through their commitments to missionaries and partners, like us, even as the budget year ended last August.

On behalf of the Soccer Chaplains United Board of Directors and the entire team of chaplains, I want to personally say thank you to Evan Eakin (our Highline missions committee liaison), Dave Meserve (former pastor of Highline who introduced us) and the entire body of believers that are part of the Highline church for your generosity and support for the past number of years. We could not have done the work God has called us to without you!

Highline Shares Some Surplus

It was a tough Thursday morning. Our board conference call the night before hadn’t gone as well as I had hoped. Technical difficulties. A warm summer evening. And then the financial news. A mid-year shortfall due to our quickening pace of growth. I left feeling a bit discouraged.

The next day, a meeting with church partner, Highline Community Church and a representative from the Missions Committee. I wasn’t sure what the meeting was about. Would the church end their financial support? Were they looking for an update? What encouraging news could I give them especially with last night’s call?

I grumbled a bit as I plugged a few coins into the parking meter. Why are we meeting here? There goes more shortfall…quarter by quarter. Hopefully, an hour and 15 is good enough. As I sat waiting, I just prayed. I was tired.

Then Evan walked in. He offered to buy lunch. We sat to eat.

Brad, I just want to know about Soccer Chaplains United…

I began to share. Defaulted to the “shortened version.” He stopped me.

No, I want to hear the whole thing. How did you get here? What was CrossTraining? How did you get to Soccer Chaplains United? What all do you do? How does it work? Everything?

Everything? Rarely, do people listen. Rarely, do people give you that much time to tell your story. But there was Evan with a notebook and pen and taking some notes, asking questions, really wanting to learn about our story, our mission, our vision.

I felt lighter. I felt lifted. I had to excuse myself to go put more quarters in the parking meter.

Then Evan shared the reason for the meeting.

Highline has some surplus in the missions budget. We want to visit with all the missionaries and groups we have been supporting and see how they are doing. No promises, but we want to see if we can be more of a blessing.

I choked back some tears. It was enough of a gift to just have someone who would listen.

Long story short, I received an email this morning from Pastor Dave Meserve at Highline…

Morning young Rev! Did you skip church to see France win the World Cup?  Just checkin’…I’m actually writing to let you know that our Missions Committee met…and we would like to help fund the Timothy Project.  I wish it could be more but we have a check…to send in.

Friends, I continue to see God work in amazing ways and in His perfect timing. His provision for His work. And so, we carry on. We continue to follow the faithful call that we have received and we know that He will provide faithful (even when we are not, or we are a bit grumbly).
