Today marks Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the season of Lent. This 40-day period (excluding Sundays) leading up to Easter is a time to prepare one’s heart, mind, and soul for the redemptive truths and joy that comes with Jesus’ death and resurrection.
This year, with the global pandemic still impacting many in the soccer community, Soccer Chaplains United chaplains have come together to offer their talents, insight, prayer, and encouragement through this video-recorded Ash Wednesday Service.

As Billy sings, O Holy Night, I hope that it helps you — where ever you are to ready your heart for Christmas. I think that many of us are waiting, this year especially, for Good News and a breaking through of the Light.
At the end of the podcast, I share a prayer, usually prayed as Christmas eve turns to Christmas morn. You can find the prayer in one of my favorite books, Celtic Daily Prayer, pages 236-237.

Fact: O Holy Night is the greatest Christmas carol of all time.Am I wrong? It never gets old and I still get goosebumps after 10,000 listens. O Holy Night’s message of waiting, hope and deliverance has always been powerful, but it rings especially true this Christmas.
“Long lay the world in sin and error pining” 2020 not only showed the fragility of the things in which we put so much trust, it showed how broken and out of control our world really is. We all felt and feel our hearts pining for peace, resolution and God’s presence. Our hearts pine for those things because they were made to.
When you consider the pining of your heart this Christmas, consider what it tells us about the one who made our hearts. It tells us He is a God of peace, resolution and is not only pining with you, He is pining for you.
“Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth” The value of something is determined by the price someone is willing to pay for it. Have you ever considered the price Jesus paid on Christmas? The infinite God left the majesty of heaven to “empty Himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men” (Phil 2:7). He chose life on Christmas so He could choose death and resurrection on Easter. When you see baby Jesus lying in a manger this Christmas, consider the incalculable price He paid in order to be with you and let your soul feel it’s worth.
“A thrill of hope the weary soul rejoices. For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!” Weary souls rejoice on Christmas because God not only made good on His promise to make all things new, He revealed how and through whom He would continue to keep that promise. This new and glorious morn points to an even newer and more glorious morn when Jesus will come again to wipe away every tear. We can trust this promise because of Christmas. We can trust this promise because He later wrote it in His own blood. So, “Let all within us praise His holy name. Christ is the Lord!”
Merry Christmas, my friends. 2020 has been a long year, but it is not the end of the story. I pray you take heart knowing that Jesus has come, He is with you now and He will come again.

Chaplains with Soccer Chaplains United recently were offered the chance to receive mental health awareness training through an opportunity created in collaboration with the Global Sports Chaplaincy Association (GSCA) and Sports Chaplaincy — UK (SCUK). SCUK National Director of Scotland, Mark Fleming, led the two-hour zoom training session which helped identified particular mental health issues that exist within professional sport and how chaplains might maintain a good level of mental health themselves and for those they serve.
Mark’s work in sports chaplaincy began with serving as Chaplain to Partick Thistle FC in 1998 and after nine years began gradually to source, train and appoint chaplains at other Scottish football clubs. Today, over 110 Scottish football clubs have chaplains and Mark has now begun to develop chaplaincy in other sports such as rugby, shinty and in gyms. Mark gained an MA in Sports Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care in 2016 and is also senior director and trainer with Positive Mental Health Scotland.
For chaplains, one of the key issues and points of ministry includes having a keen awareness of mental health issues that confront many within the context of sport, especially soccer. There is stigma attached into mental health issues and many in soccer don’t even realize that they are suffering or struggling with particular issues of mental health. In fact, there is a high degree of misnomer around the differences between mental health and mental illness, a point Mark highlighted,
We often get mixed up between mental health and mental illness. We all have mental health, but sometimes our mental health borders on having a mental illness, and that’s where we need help.

As well as identifying and speaking to the differences with mental health and mental illness, the presentation covered steps toward positive mental health. Each step and activity designed to reinforce and help a person build up a strong mentality — especially important in the difficult and turbulent times facing sports people and the world.

Recently, Major League Soccer (MLS), National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and United Soccer Leagues (USL) have all announced plans for returning to play. MLS has yet to declare or confirm actual dates, but the reported plan is to have a league-wide, 30-day tournament in Orlando, FL to re-start the season. NWSL have already revealed a schedule for the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup, a 25-game tournament beginning June 27. The USL Championship has announced July 11 as the provisional “return to play” date, though many more logistics need to be confirmed and factored.
This week I have been in contact with Soccer Chaplains United chaplains throughout the U.S., and we are also seeing most of the college and high school teams (in varying capacities) readying to come back in the fall and resume collegiate and HS athletic programs, albeit with some likely changes and guidelines with the novel Coronavirus pandemic.
So what about chaplains? How have chaplains been serving during this time when sports and soccer, specifically, have been so significantly altered?
Well, there have been Zoom Bible studies, grocery store runs to help get toilet paper or diapers for athletes without a car and unable to make it to a store, hospital visits, phone call check-ins and much more.
If you were to have asked me at the beginning, how busy do you think you will be? I don’t think that I would have known how much time would actually be given to supporting people in the midst of the pandemic and now in the face of the protests that are happening around the U.S. and around the world.
For some, chaplains and those we serve, the time has been difficult. The suspension of sports and uncertainty of the future (some of which the uncertainty still exists) had been challenging. For many, the requisite lockdown and shut down of “normal” life has created a stress and strain on vocational life and marriages and on people’s faith.
But now, there seems to be some glimmer of hope — at least that things might begin to come back. Start to grow back. It reminded me of earlier this year when I pruned our rose bushes (see below). To be honest, it seemed to many that I had likely killed them cutting them back so far. It all seemed dead and lifeless.

But in due time (and with some proper water and sunlight) the roses are coming back. They are just now starting to bud out, so there won’t be as many roses this year, as in years past, but they are coming back. And sometimes simply coming back and flourishing, even in the midst of a difficult winter or heavy pruning season, can give us hope and room to breathe and believe. I know that I, for one, am glad to see new life beginning to emerge, again.

More than a few people have asked me, “What does your work and ministry look like right now?” When probing further into their questions, the obvious is part of their inquiry — there aren’t any sports going on right now, social distancing means that people aren’t together in the ways they used to be — so what does chaplaincy in soccer look like?
Allow me to share some quick samples from Soccer Chaplains United’s work:
An athlete from another country is without a car while playing here for one of our lower division teams — getting to physical therapy appointments has been difficult. One of our chaplains has stepped up to drive him to his appointments.
Another athlete and his wife recently welcomed a new child — diapers, wipes, and toilet paper are hard to come by. One of our chaplains brought some much needed supplies.
Chaplains are utilizing apps like Houseparty and FaceTime to connect with athletes and do bible or group study topics.
Chaplains are connecting via WhatsApp to athletes and coaches in the US and in other countries who are currently without support.
Chaplains are conducting virtual Bible studies through the Bible app.
Chaplains are emailing and texting staff, athletes, coaches.
Chaplains are engaging in discipleship with encouraged book and Bible reading and back and forth email and document dialogues.
Soccer Chaplains United has redesigned and relaunching a new app during this time.
And what is the state of football (soccer) right now? Again, some quick hitters:
Major League Soccer athletes are reportedly being asked to take a 50% pay cut
United Soccer League (lower divisions of soccer in US) are furloughing staff.
Soccer Chaplains United chaplains are volunteers and they are balancing their current vocational work and family loads right now from home, in addition to supporting those that we serve with our various teams. We continue to need your prayers and your support during this time.
Pray for those that are in the midst of losing their jobs.
Pray for those who depend on the generosity of donors for their support and fundraising and expenditures for ministry with Soccer Chaplains United.
Pray for those who are feeling tired and fatigued with the heavy load of zoom calls and schedules.
Pray for those who have ethical and moral responsibilities for incomes and wages of people in their organizations.

The Lewan Family Foundation has, once again, provided a grant to help support the work of Soccer Chaplains United. The foundation has partnered now, for the last four years, with our ministry. Their partnership has helped sustain Soccer Chaplains United through some key organizational moments, including the rebranding of the ministry which happened a couple of years ago.
The Lewan family has been a notable name in Denver for many years through their company, Lewan Technology. The Lewan Family Foundation has had a long legacy of service and support of many local Denver and Colorado organizations including Denver Seminary, where many of our chaplains and counselors have received training.
Soccer Chaplains United is non-profit, 501(c)3 and we are dependent upon the financial support of our partners to carry out our work of developing chaplaincy, counseling, and community service across all levels of soccer.
